Corporate Mix teams ready to take on Super League Jersey on 23-24 September, 2017

Super League Triathlon continues to revolutionize the sport of triathlon with Corporate Mix: an opportunity for corporate participants to race against each other on the Super League Triathlon Championship course on the same weekend.

Adding the Corporate Mix to the Super League Triathlon festival line-up has allowed local community and businesses to be part of a major sporting event. For Super League Jersey on 23-24 September, Ravenscroft Group, First Names Group, and Santander International are some of the big names that have fielded multiple relay teams as official corporate package partners.

They will have Super League Triathlon swag, corporate branding across the front of their sponsored athletes’ racing uniforms, and unique corporate hospitality packages inclusive of special meet-and-greets with the pros. This makes the Corporate Mix a prime opportunity to reward employees, excite partners and attract new business opportunities.

Corporates have put together relay teams of two to six athletes with at least one swimmer, one cyclist, and one runner to race the Enduro format: swim-bike-run-swim-bike-run. Their sponsorship will also link one male and one female professional athlete from the Super League Triathlon championship line-up to the team. The team position on the Corporate Mix leaderboard will be determined by the total of their points from the relay team finish position plus the points from the sponsored athlete’s finish position. This adds another dimension to the professional racing because athletes are not just racing for themselves, but also their corporate teams!

Meet the teams below.

Lee Marine

Lee Marine is Thailand’s leading luxury yachting company, specialising in the sale and purchase, after sales care, management and construction of some of the finest yachts in the world.

Lee Marine’s name has become synonymous with professionalism, expertise, market knowledge, design and build excellence.

After having sponsored Super League Hamilton Island, Lee Marine is fielding a team for the Corporate mix at Super League Jersey with its own founder and managing director Joshua Lee at the helm.

Joshua is not a stranger to triathlons, having taken part in previous worldwide sporting events of all distances. He also has the additional benefit of being Super League Triathlon co-founder Chris McCormack’s good friend, and neighbor in Phuket.

He trusts in Macca’s judgment in picking Lee Marine’s sponsored pro-athletes, and with European champion Rachel Klamer and Australian Olympian Ryan Bailie on board, he definitely thinks the Lee Marine team will win — and the company will benefit from lots of media coverage, especially television.

Ravenscroft Group

Ravenscroft is a leading stockbroking and investment management firm based in Guernsey and Jersey. Haydn Taylor, Managing Director of Ravenscroft Group’s Jersey offices said: “Ravenscroft is a significant sponsor of sport in the Channel Islands and we are proud to support some of the islands’ successful athletes including triathletes Jack Kennedy, Andrea Nightingale and Josh Lewis. We recognise talent, within the wider community and in our own teams, and are committed to nurturing it. The Super League Triathlon is a huge event for Jersey and we look forward to playing a part in showcasing the island to a global audience through the extensive media coverage the weekend will attract.”

The Ravenscroft teams are strong contenders, counting among them professional cyclist James McLaughlin. He said, “Taking to the start-line of the Corporate Super League Triathlon will be my first time competing in this multi-sport discipline. I’m taking part because it’s a brilliant opportunity for me to represent a passionate and ambitious company, in Ravenscroft, who have supported my career as a sportsman for the last few years.”

Andrea Nightingale has been sponsored by Ravenscroft for the last two years at the Age Group World Triathlon Olympic Distance Championships, and she is highly competitive having finished 22nd in the world in Cozumel. “Even at 56 years old I hate losing!” she said. She will be cycling for Ravenscroft.

Tom Nuth, also a cyclist, hopes that participating in the Corporate Mix will help him gain an understanding of what’s physically required to complete a triathlon having never done one before. “I hope this is the start of more to come,” he said.

The youngest athlete fielded is 15-year-old Jack Kennedy. “I have been participating in triathlon since I was 8 years of age. I found out about Super League Triathlon earlier this year after watching Hamilton Island, and I met Macca who told me much more about it when he was in Jersey,” he said. “My biggest strength in triathlon is running.”

Ravenscroft Group’s sponsored pro athletes are Rio Olympic bronze medalist Henri Schoeman and WTS Number 11 Taylor Spivey for Team 1, while Team 2 will star the lucky Irish Ben Shaw and European vice-champion Sophie Coldwell.

Team manager Jason Shambrook said, “We picked our team’s pro athletes using ratings found online, past performances, and looks!”

Ravenscroft’s team members are excited about the racing to come. “I’m looking forward to the pre-race nerves then the competitiveness with the adrenaline rush, finishing with the feeling of joy and relief at the end,” said runner Justin Jouan.

First Names Group are thrilled to partner with the highest profile event the island has ever hosted and look forward to giving some of our ‘First Names’ the opportunity to compete in the Super League ‘Corporate Mix’ Cup which will be an incredible experience for all involved.”

Twelve from across their jurisdictions will come together to compete in the Corporate Mix.

Both will be backing up from the world age-group sprint triathlon championships in Rotterdam happening the week before Super League Jersey, but they wouldn’t dare miss the home race. “It was too good an opportunity to miss,” said Nick. Jo added, “This is the biggest sporting event Jersey has ever seen and it’s a privilege to be part of it.”

As part of First Names Group’s corporate partnership, the company is sponsoring two professional athletes. From the men’s line-up it is Richard Varga who holds the world’s fastest swim time in an Olympic triathlon, and from the women’s line-up it is the current women’s American World Triathlon Series leader Katie Zaferes.

MaccaNow Foundation

The MaccaNow Foundation was set up to commemorate Chris McCormack’s mother who passed away from breast cancer in 1999, with a goal to raise financial assistance for families in active treatment for breast cancer. It has fielded one team for Super League Jersey made of members from Macca’s triathlon coaching platform MaccaX. Adrian O’Brien, Lucy Richardson, James Bale, Richard Frickleton, and Anthony Holdsworth all hail from the UK and will be making the short hop from the mainland to the Island for race weekend. Swozzi Swimwear founder Rebekah Bruhwiller rounds out the team’s relay members.

Adrian will be racing hard for his sister, who is overcoming breast cancer. “She is unable to attend the Jersey race due to undergoing her second mastectomy,” he said.

Lucy has been doing triathlon for three years. “Having done competitive sports all my life I go into everything to win!” she said. “I hope the weekend will be fun, hard, crazy, and something new and fresh.”

James expects fast and frantic racing, high heart rate, and a lot of satisfaction. He said, “Racing Super League Triathlon is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be involved in, and on my doorstep no less.”

MaccaNow’s sponsored pro athletes are ITU mixed team relay world champion Ben Kanute and Bahrain’s first professional triathlete Sameera Al Bitar.

Santander International

Santander International offers banking and savings accounts to Channel Island and Isle of Man residents, UK expats and UK residents who have international banking needs and Corporate Banking solutions for Channel Island and Isle of Man domiciled companies. A branch of Santander UK plc and part of the Banco Santander group, Santander International also offers banking and savings accounts for corporate and trust structures, including Self-Invested Personal Pensions and other types of pension structures and Private Investment Companies.

Susan Clark, Head of Marketing at Santander International commented: “Santander International are delighted to be involved with Super League Triathlon and look forward to welcoming everyone to Jersey in September.”

Santander invited their own executives as well as other local corporates to race on two teams. Jon McGowan, the Group Chief Executive of the MAC Group, and wife Heather McGowan are on deck for the run and swim respectively for Team 1. Heather had also previously swum on a team in Abu Dhabi this year. With swimming as her strength, she believes the biggest challenge for her will be the sea conditions. Previously having participated in the corporate race at another triathlon and raced distances all the way to half-ironman, Jon wanted to try Super League Triathlon’s format. “I expect hard racing and good fun,” he said.

Louise Brackensmith is the owner of Fairway Group and Bracken Rothwell and is one of two cyclists for Team 1 alongside Patrick Kennedy, director of Columbia Estates. “So excited to be part of such an incredible event,” Brackensmith said of being invited by Santander. She is also currently training for the ITU World Championship, representing Ireland in her age group.

Jo Gorrod, Director of Client Services at Equiom, and her husband Nick are both avid triathletes who heard about Super League Triathlon from their coach Nick Saunders who had been on Hamilton Island for the inaugural event. Racing on Team 1, both will be backing up from the world age-group sprint triathlon championships in Rotterdam happening the week before Super League Jersey,. They say they wouldn’t dare miss the home race. “It was too good an opportunity to miss,” said Nick. Jo added, “This is the biggest sporting event Jersey has ever seen and it’s a privilege to be part of it.”

James Geldart, the head of High Net Worth Clients and Select Banking at Santander International, will be one of the cyclists for Team 2. He decided to participate to challenge himself over a different type of course and distance, and to compete in a great location on the same course as the pros. He said, “I expect it to be technically challenging on the bike. The course is tight and short so I expect it to be fast and furious with no room for mistakes.” Will Wright (head of Operations, CTO and Risk Officer at Rubicon Fund Management) and Jane Stafford (project analyst, Santander International) join James on Team 2.

Spain’s pride Fernando Alarza and Carolina Router are the sponsored athletes linked to both teams. Santander International believes that with the teams made of athletes who compete at local, national, and international levels, either of their two teams have a strong chance of winning.

Comprop CI

Based in the Channel Islands, Comprop is a leading privately owned property developer of both commercial and residential sites in Jersey and Guernsey. Comprop has built up a proven track record for high quality property development across the Channel Islands, priding themselves in “Building for the Future.”

Its sponsored pro athletes are Kristian Blummenfelt and Emma Pallant. Blummenfelt won the first two stages of the Triple Mix at Super League Hamilton Island, while Pallant is the 2017 Ironman 70.3 World Championship runner-up, former track star, two-time duathlon world champion, and has won short and middle-distance triathlon events alike.

Comprop’s team members were pulled into the racing by Nick Saunders, who coaches most of them and will be acting as team manager. Nick, who coached an athlete who raced Hamilton Island, says tongue-in-cheek he selected the sponsored pro athletes by picking the best-looking flags. Katie Silva, one of the runners for Comprop, campaigned for one athlete in particular. “I come from a running background so I was keen to have Emma Pallant in our team as she was also a fellow athlete.”

Ollie Turner is a full-time triathlete with a mountain bike background who hopes to race eventually in the elite race. He said he expects to “gain experience and meet the pros on a one-to-one level.”

Team members agreed on the importance of participating in Super League Triathlon. Michael Charlton said, “Can’t miss a chance when it’s on home turf.”

Tom Perchard and Fintan Kennedy round out the Comprop team membership.

Jersey Triathlon Club

The Jersey Triathlon Club is amongst the first formed in the UK (est. 1985). With a varied programme of races, including aquathlon, duathlon and triathlon covering a multitude of distances for the club race calendar, each year culminates in the club’s main event, the Jersey Olympic Distance Triathlon.

The Jersey Triathlon Club is fielding three teams for the Corporate Mix, with two sponsored pro athletes each.

Team 1 will star Russian Olympian Igor Polyanskiy and Australian mixed relay world champion Charlotte McShane. Team 2 pairs Igor’s brother Dmitri Polyanskiy with 2016 WTS Edmonton winner Summer Cook. Matt Hauser, who finished 13th at Super League Hamilton island, is on Team 3 with super-swimmer Lucy Hall.

Notably, Team 3 will be composed of Jersey Triathlon Club’s junior talents who stand a chance of shocking the grown-ups with their pure speed. “I think we could win because we have a strong team with all our athletes being very good at the discipline they are racing in,” says William Atkinson, who is racing with his brother Thomas.

Lily McGarry watched Super League Hamilton Island on television and knew she couldn’t miss being a part of it this time in Jersey. “I am so privileged to be given the chance to participate in such an event racing alongside the world’s best elite triathletes. I think it is something that all junior triathletes dream of,” she said. “I think I will gain an incredible experience that I will treasure and I hope to learn new skills from watching the elite athletes compete that will help me to improve my own racing in the future.”
